Downtown is firmly established as Tucson’s cultural center. One of just 14 American cities to boast professional companies in theater, dance, symphony, and opera, Tucson is recognized for its strong arts community. Downtown is where these and other arts groups create and showcase their work.
The Downtown area is home to Tucson’s creative class. Tucson has more working artists per capita than any city in the United States, and many of them live and work in the Warehouse Arts District and other Downtown neighborhoods.
Tucson’s rich layers of culture are evident in Downtown’s architecture and in its neighborhoods. The Old Pueblo is the longest continuously inhabited community in North America, with evidence of organized settlement going back more than 4,000 years. Downtown is literally built over ancient pit-houses, and on the foundation of the walled city established as el presidio del Tucson in 1775.
