Join Strolls and Stories Tours to hear the historic stories, fascinating tales, and our interesting tidbits of Tucson History! Scott, your tour guide, has a passion for a good story and really gets into the tales to bring history to life! We begin with our historic St. Augustine Cathedral to hear the history of the cathedral, plus an overview of Tucson's founding way back in 1775. We discuss our 4,000+ years of Native American history...and we learn where Tucson gets its name from - that's an interesting story!
Then we head down Historic Scott Avenue to see several prominent historic buildings designed by Henry Trost – the famous architect of the Southwest. We will learn of a famous movie filmed in one building, hear the story of Tucson’s first luxury hotel, learn of a diving girl, and hear the tale of Tucson’s griffin – this this quite the story! Next, we stroll past a charming historic theatre to learn the history of the Temple of Music & Art – it’s a beautiful structure with a fascinating story!
Then we head into the Barrio Viejo, historically the working-class neighborhood of the city, and today the largest concentration of mud adobe buildings found in a single neighborhood anywhere in the United States! We will uncover the melting pot of cultures who lived in this neighborhood, and hear the stories of the families of the Barrio – it was historically a lively neighborhood where everyone knew everyone! We will see the location of former general mercantiles and corner groceries and learn of Tucson’s historic Spanish speaking and Chinese American residents.
We will visit the El Tiradito Wishing Shrine to hear the story of young Juan Oliveras – this is quite the tale…and we hear how he gets redemption for his sinful ways 100 years later! We see the location of the El Ojito Natural Spring and learn the story of Tucson’s first park!
We will learn of the Angel of Tucson and see the location of a historic Jewish mercantile, plus learn the story of a Spanish language playhouse that dates to 1915, that is being brought back to life! All of this and so much more on our Barrio Viejo Tucson & Historic Scott Avenue Guided Walking Tour by Strolls and Stories Tours. Priced $35 per person.
