The first of two concerts showcasing vocal music is the remarkable arc of the American art song, a genre that, in little more than a century, evolved from its roots in German Lieder and French mélodie into a musical language entirely its own. Across the twentieth century, composers drew on jazz, musical theater, folk traditions, and contemporary poetry to create a repertoire defined by energetic rhythms, rich harmonies, and expressive storytelling. Audiences will hear selections from some of the nation’s most celebrated composers, alongside a handful of traditional operatic arias offered for contrast. This is a musical program that moves from lyrical beauty and heartfelt emotion to wit, charm, and dramatic flourish.
