Pima County District 2 Supervisor Dr. Matt Heinz is pleased to welcome the President of Strong Towns Chuck Marohn to Tucson for two days of speaking engagements about his newest book Confessions of a Recovering Engineer. These public events will take place on Tuesday, November 16th at 6:00pm at the MSA Annex, 267 South Avenida del Convento and Wednesday, November 17th at 8:00am in partnership with the University of Arizona College of Architecture Planning and Landscape Architecture.
Like many areas of North America, the greater Tucson region continues to struggle financially despite decades of growth. From tax breaks reserved for large-scale developments, to ever-sprawling housing developments, and expensive transportation plans focused primarily on road widening, we find ourselves no closer to the elusive goal of opportunity and prosperity for all.
In this book tour presentation, Marohn, a professional transportation engineer, reveals how the standard approach to issues like fighting congestion, addressing speeding, and designing intersections only makes those transportation problems worse, at great cost to society in terms of both safety and resources. By contrast, the Strong Towns approach to transportation focuses on bottom-up techniques for spending less and getting higher returns, all while making investments that will build wealth and improve quality of life for all residents.
In addition to support from the office of Supervisor Heinz, this event is sponsored by: the University of Arizona’s College of Architecture Planning and Landscape Architecture and NITC, the National Institute for Transportation and Communities, Trek Bicycles, Living Streets Alliance, the Historic Fourth Avenue Coalition, and Petroglyphs in the MSA (Mercado San Agustin) Annex.
In-person capacity at the November 16th event at the MSA Annex is limited to 250 people with masks required. The presentation on November 17th at the University of Arizona has limited in-person capacity and UArizona students and local practitioners will be prioritized. The location will be outdoors, and the event will follow UArizona requirements, including masking.
