The 22nd annual Tucson Film Festival returns October 8–11, 2026, bringing four days of independent filmmaking, storytelling, music, and special events to downtown Tucson. This year’s festival continues its tradition of championing independent cinema while showcasing films and filmmakers with connections to Arizona and the desert Southwest. The 2026 program features six feature-length films and 30 short films, representing a diverse range of documentary, narrative, music, and personal filmmaking.
The festival officially opens Friday, October 9 with The Palomino, a documentary from first-time filmmaking duo director Adrienne Isom and writer KP Hawthorn. The film explores the remarkable history of the legendary Los Angeles honky-tonk that helped shape the future of American music, chronicling the beating heart of California country music from 1949 to 1995.
Saturday’s Centerpiece presentation is the world premiere of Music Ruined My Life, directed by Matt Goldman, a University of Arizona graduate and Tucson Film Festival alumnus. The wild, weird, and darkly funny personal documentary follows Goldman’s attempt to form an experimental jazz-punk trio while attending the UofA in the 1990s, drawing from a lifetime of video documentation to explore creativity, failure, and the lasting impact of artistic ambition.
The festival concludes Sunday evening with the Tucson premiere of The Only Way Out Is Through, directed by Kieran Thompson. The narrative drama follows three high school friends who embark on a backpacking trip in search of hope and a better life. The film stars Alex MacNicoll (Bad Monkey, Transparent) and Beau Knapp (The Bikeriders, Tulsa King), and was an Official Selection of the Fargo Film Festival, Phoenix Film Festival, and Julian Dubuque International Film Festival.
“These three anchor films truly represent the mission of the festival and I hope audiences will enjoy them,” said Michael Toubassi, Festival Director and founder of the Tucson Film Festival. “We are thrilled to welcome these fantastic films and filmmakers to Tucson!”
The 2026 Tucson Film Festival will be held at The Screening Room, 127 E. Congress Street, in downtown Tucson, with screenings throughout the weekend. A full schedule featuring all six feature films and 30 short films will be announced soon.
