Slow Down, Tune In, Feel Good: Inside Downtown Tucson's Newest Wellness Studio

Categories DTP Updates Things to Do

El Ritual's welcoming lobby and boutique set the tone for a wellness experience centered on slowing down and reconnecting with yourself.

With contrast therapy, thoughtful amenities, and a welcoming atmosphere, El Ritual is bringing a new approach to everyday self-care in Downtown Tucson.

Between busy workdays, packed schedules, and everything else life throws our way, finding a moment to slow down can feel like a luxury. But what if taking time for yourself became something you looked forward to doing regularly?

That's the idea behind El Ritual, a new wellness studio in Downtown Tucson where relaxation, restoration, and a little time for yourself are all part of the experience. For owner Jaqueleen Larson, the vision was simple: create a space where self-care feels less like an occasional indulgence and more like an everyday ritual.

We stopped by the new studio for a behind-the-scenes tour, a look at the thoughtfully designed space, and a conversation about what inspired her to bring this new wellness experience to Downtown Tucson.

Making Self-Care a Ritual

Tucson has long been recognized as a destination for wellness, drawing visitors looking to unwind, recharge, and reconnect with themselves. But Jaqueleen saw an opportunity to bring that same sense of restoration a little closer to home.

"We all know and love that Tucson is this national wellness destination," she explained. "I wanted El Ritual to become the self-care ritual for Tucsonans." That idea is reflected in the studio's name. Rather than treating wellness as something reserved for vacations, special occasions, or the occasional spa day, Jaqueleen hopes to encourage people to make it a regular part of their routines.

At the center of El Ritual is a simple mantra: Slow down. Tune in. Feel good. It's an invitation to step away from the day's distractions, reconnect with your body, and give yourself permission to take up a little space.

The Art of Hot and Cold

A handcrafted Finnish sauna and three temperature-controlled plunge tubs invite guests to experience the art of contrast therapy at their own pace.

The heart of El Ritual is its contrast therapy area, where guests can experience the alternating sensations of heat and cold through a traditional Finnish sauna and a collection of plunge tubs.

The experience begins with a shower, followed by time in the sauna to warm up, settle in, and leave the day's stress behind. And this isn't just any sauna. Handcrafted from alder wood using traditional tongue-and-groove construction, the spacious sauna is designed to be enjoyed without feeling cramped or rushed. With room to stretch out, put your legs up, and get comfortable, it's a space that encourages guests to truly relax.

After spending time in the heat, guests can cool down with a refreshing shower before choosing their next experience. El Ritual features three plunge tubs, including two cold options with varying levels of intensity and one warm tub. The studio can also adjust the temperatures seasonally, offering flexibility for different comfort levels and preferences. For those who aren't quite ready to take the plunge, Jaqueleen emphasizes that the experience can be adapted to what feels right for each person. Even a quick cool shower can be a way to explore the contrast between temperatures.

Guests are encouraged to move through the sauna and plunge experience at their own pace, typically completing two or three rounds before continuing to the studio's light and sound experience. The goal isn't to push yourself to the limit. It's to slow down, pay attention to how you're feeling, and discover what works for you.

A Little More Than a Sauna Session

While contrast therapy may be the main attraction, the experience at El Ritual begins well before guests step into the sauna and continues after their final plunge.

Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed into a thoughtfully designed lobby and lounge, where they're provided with a linen robe, towel, and studio slides from Archie's. With body wash, face wash, and other essentials available, Jaqueleen has worked to make the experience as convenient as possible.

"You really just have to bring yourself to the space," she shared. "We take care of almost everything else." The studio also features a tea bar with a selection of herbal blends, refreshing beverages, and small touches designed to complement the experience.

Thoughtful touches, including books and guided journaling sheets, encourage guests to take a moment for reflection before returning to their day.

And when the session is over, there's no need to rush out the door. Guests are encouraged to settle into the lounge, enjoy a beverage, browse a book, spend a few minutes journaling, or strike up a conversation with someone new. Jaqueleen hopes this space becomes just as meaningful as the wellness experience itself. Whether that means connecting with a neighbor or simply sitting quietly with your thoughts, the lounge offers a gentle transition before stepping back into the outside world.

Finding Your Moment in Downtown Tucson

For Jaqueleen, El Ritual is about creating opportunities for people to reconnect with themselves, even when life feels especially busy. She imagines guests stopping by after a long workday, between classes, or whenever they need a little time to reset.

It's an experience designed to fit into everyday life rather than require an entire day set aside for relaxation. And with its new home in Downtown Tucson, El Ritual adds another dimension to the growing collection of experiences that make downtown a place to explore, connect, and spend time. From the warmth of the handcrafted sauna to the quiet comfort of the lounge, every detail encourages guests to move a little more slowly and make space for themselves. Because sometimes, the best thing you can add to your schedule is a moment to do nothing at all.

Beyond the sauna and plunge tubs, El Ritual offers a dedicated space for guests to unwind through its light and sound experience.
