Last Call to Enter the Haiku Hike Literary Competition

This year’s theme is Serenity

DOWNTOWN TUCSON, AZ, February 22, 2024 – There’s only one week left to submit haiku! The 5th annual Haiku Hike literary competition, presented by the Downtown Tucson Partnership (DTP) and the University of Arizona Poetry Center, is accepting submissions through February 29.

This year’s theme is Serenity. Twenty winning haiku poems will be printed on acrylic signage and displayed in planters located on Congress Street and Stone Avenue in Downtown Tucson.

“We are looking forward to reading everyone’s interpretations of Serenity. To me, Serenity is about the acceptance of things outside of our control, and the faith that our challenges will strengthen and prepare us for a better life,” stated Kathleen Eriksen, President & CEO of the DTP.

Haiku entries will be judged by Tucson’s Poet Laureate, TC Tolbert. All winners will receive public recognition and have their work featured on public signage downtown, online and in the media. These signs will provide visual and cultural interest during the season, beginning on the first day of spring, Tuesday, March 19.

A haiku is a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables in three lines of five, seven and five. Haiku depicts a concise sentiment with rich imagery revolving around seasonal topics. Learn more about haiku here.

Interested poets may enter at downtowntucson.org/haikuhike and winners will be announced on DTP’s website, social media and by email to all entrants.

Last year’s theme was Planting Seeds. 1,556 haiku were submitted from 23 countries, 28 states and 1,114 coming from Tucson.
